Camping gear and accessories

Camping gearHello, outdoor enthusiasts, and welcome to Campingandoutdoor.org. Campingandoutdoor.org is an informational site devoted to answering consumer questions about camping gear and provides information and tips about having a good camping trip.

Before heading out on any camping trip, campers should plan their trip well. This includes mapping out a path to get to the destination. It also includes preparing a list of necessary camping gear and camping accessories.

Campers should prepare for their trip by deciding what to bring before they leave. Following is a partial list of equipment that will make the outdoor experience more enjoyable:

• Tents – tents can fit one person or be family sized. However, if going into the woods without an automobile to hold the tent, look for a lightweight tent that holds 1 to 2 people. Tents are now quite easy to set up and can be put together in under 10 minutes. Tents also have a mesh covering to protect against pests such as mosquitoes.

• Hiking boots – these are necessary to provide ankle support if the camper is carrying a heavy load of camping gear or is hiking rocky terrain. Popular brands include Columbia, Vasque, and Rockport. Be sure to wear the boots and break them in before taking the trip. This will reduce blistering during the vacation. Also, look for a waterproof model.

• Socks – don't use cotton socks that are in the closet simply because they are readily available. Hikers should use sock liners to wick away sweat to a wool sock.

• Sleeping bags – this piece of camping gear provides comfort while a camp or sleeps during the night. Sleeping bags can be made of synthetic liners or can be filled with down. Down is considered preferable to synthetics because it is lighter, more compact, and warmer. However, if a down sleeping bag gets wet during a trip it is extremely difficult to dry it out.

• Matches – these are necessary for starting camp fires. Be sure to pack them in a Ziploc bag in case of rain. Also, consider bringing along a lighter for backup. Before building a fire, campers should learn the rules of fire safety.

• A hat or sunglasses – these camping accessories are helpful to keep the sun out of a camper's eyes. Consider purchasing polarized sunglasses to reduce glare if taking a trip alongside a body of water.

• Bathroom kit – while one goes to the outdoors for the experience of roughing it, there are certain items that must be taken along. Bring some toilet paper, a toothbrush, toothpaste, and any other essentials. Be sure to place these items in a Ziploc bag so none of them leak onto other gear. Also, in case of rain, the Ziploc bag will prevent water from entering the bathroom kit.

• Packs – these are used to carry camping gear while hiking. Older packs had external frames which were visible from the outside. Newer packs more commonly use internal frames. They can more easily be transported on trains and airplanes if they need to be checked. In addition, they hold more equipment. To carry other items purchase a set of bungee cords to attach additional pieces such as a sleeping bag to the top or bottom of the pack.

Campers should also research the Internet for camping tips, recipes, and ideas for cleaning and maintaining equipment. With the right knowledge camping can be an enjoyable lifelong hobby.
